Sell your call recordings to AI: Zoom, Gong and consent

Two AI companies take business call recordings and transcripts. Who they are, how to get files out of Zoom and Gong, and why consent decides what can sell.

Sales calls, support calls and customer interviews show how people talk through a problem in real time. Two of the companies we list take them: Mode takes recordings and transcripts, and Maryah takes transcripts from approved business calls.

Everyone on a recorded call had to agree to it where the law requires it. The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press counts about 11 states that mainly require every party’s consent, including California, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Washington. If anyone on the call was in one of those states, treat the call as needing everyone’s consent.

Before you offer calls, check how they were recorded. A call tool that announced the recording, or a meeting where everyone saw the notice, is a better starting point than a phone line recorded quietly.

Zoom: download each recording, or use the API

Cloud recording needs a Pro or Business account. Zoom lets you download recordings one at a time from its recording management page, or download and delete them through its API. For years of calls, plan on the API.

If the account drops to the free plan, Zoom sets cloud recordings to be deleted after 30 days.

Gong: ask for the export before you leave

Gong’s terms say that within 30 days of termination it will make customer data, recorded calls included, available to export or download, and then delete it. There’s no simple bulk download, so ask Gong for the export as soon as you plan to cancel.

What to take out

  • Calls with lawyers or about legal matters. They may be privileged.
  • Calls with health, pay or HR details.
  • Calls where consent is unclear. Leave them out rather than argue about them later.

Transcripts are easier to clean than audio. If a company takes either, start with transcripts.
