Years of Zendesk tickets show how a company’s customers ask for help and how its agents answer, step by step. Five of the companies we list take support tickets, and Grepped, Scale and Telegraph name Zendesk. Support tickets covers Intercom and Freshdesk.
Zendesk’s terms keep the tickets yours
Zendesk’s customer agreement says the customer retains ownership of all Service Data. Zendesk’s generative AI features aren’t trained on customer data, and its own classification models are trained on it unless the account owner asks support to opt out, subdomain by subdomain. None of that limits what you license to someone else.
Exports are off by default and not on Team plans
The account owner has to contact Zendesk support to switch data exports on. The export tools are for Growth, Professional and Enterprise plans; Team plans can export only through the API, which every plan can use.
Once exports are on, pick the format with care:
- CSV leaves out ticket comments and descriptions, so it’s a list of tickets, not the conversations.
- JSON or XML carries the full ticket. Zendesk recommends JSON above 200,000 tickets.
Closed tickets are archived, not deleted
A closed ticket is archived 120 days after closing. It drops out of views but stays searchable, in the API and in exports. Tickets are only deleted through a deletion schedule an admin sets, so check whether anyone set one before you count on the history.
The clocks that run out
- You can export during the term and for 30 days after it ends.
- Deletion starts 90 days after the account is canceled, and ticket data, user data and attachments are then deleted within a further 40 days.
Your customers wrote half of it
Every ticket is a conversation with a customer, under your terms and your privacy policy. Before you share a sample, check what you told customers about their data, strip anything with payment details or health information, and ask each company how it removes names and personal details. The rights checklist covers customer contracts.
